d. All of the above
8. In Module 2, “Generalist Practice” you are directed to watch a
short video demonstrating the stage of “engagement” in the Generalist
Intervention Model GIM). The video aligns with the Kirst-Ashman text, Understanding Generalist Practice, that you will use in Practice 1.
Watch the video and list the actions the social worker takes to
successfully complete this stage with his client. These are identified
for you as you watch.
See Module 3, “Ethics” for the following section:
9. You are a school social worker in a large urban high school. A
potential employer of a student who attends a support group you
facilitate calls you to inquire about the student’s grades, explaining
that the client listed you as a reference. What legal/ethical concepts
(besides confidentiality) come to mind as you prepare to respond? Note:
See “Ethical and Legal Concepts for Helpers” handout.
10. Miranda is a BSW working at Helping Hands of Boca. She
interviews a couple having trouble making their rent this month. Helping
Hands can sometimes provide a month’s rent for a client who satisfies
certain conditions such as recent unemployment, a newborn in the home,
risk for eviction, first time request for aid with rent, etc.
Clients receive a copy of the policy which states that the client
receives the aid “with no strings attached”, that is without obligation
to repay, perform service, etc…
However, Miranda requires her clients to attend classes in budgeting in order to receive the benefit. Which legal/ethical concept is she violating? Note: See “Ethical and Legal Concepts for Helpers” handout.
11. Emilio is a recent graduate of the BSW program at FAU. In his

facilitates a group for persons suffering from severe PTSD. Emilio
respectfully refuses the request. What ethical or legal concept is he upholding? Note: See “Ethical and Legal Concepts for Helpers” handout.
12.. Name the Standards of the NASW Code of Ethics relevant to
the following scenario. Include both the name and standard with decimal
point.
A social worker in a rural community with limited mental health care
services is consulted on a client with agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder
involving a fear of open and public spaces. Since this problem is
outside of the clinician’s knowledge and experience, agreeing to work
with the client could be a violation of Ethical Standard __.__.However,
because of the limited options for treatment and the client`s discomfort
in being too far from home, the client might not receive any services
if the social worker declined to treat him. Denying to see the patient
then would be potentially in conflict with Ethical Standard___.
13. This situation in which two standards are in conflict is called a/an _____________________.
Read the case studies below and respond to the questions.
14. The client is 57-year-old gentleman with aggressive prostate
cancer. After several surgeries and exhaustive chemo and radiation
treatment, he was advised by the medical team that any further
surgical/medical intervention would not be appropriate and that a
palliative care regimen was the next step. At this point the patient
reported to the health care team that he had resigned himself to the
fact that he was going to die. He confided to the social worker that he
planned to kill himself and that this was a secret he told her because
he trusted her.
What ethical standards are involved in this scenario?
15. Ethically Sound Decision Making Requires Critical Thinking.
(see text and slide # 12 of Ethics in Social Work ppt on Module 3). Read
the following case study and answer the question that follows.
The social worker was called to the emergency department of a medical
center. A two year old was being examined for respiratory distress
caused from bronchitis. The parents were Vietnamese and spoke little
English. The physician was concerned because of red marks the size of
quarters on the child’s back. Based on this finding, the worker decided
that the child should be placed in foster care pending an
investigation. Before this action was taken, however, the social work
supervisor was consulted. Upon closer observation, the supervisor noted
that the child was well nourished and seemed to have a healthy
attachment to both parents who handled the child in a nurturing,
affectionate manner. She sat down with the parents and communicated
through gestures and limited conversation that she was interested in
their story about the child’s condition. Meanwhile, she sent for a
Vietnamese interpreter who was able to translate that the quarter sized
marks on the child’s back resulted from folk treatment in which metal
(quarters in this case) were warmed and applied to the back of the
person with a bad cough, helping to loosen the phlegm in the person’s
chest. The result was a first degree burn like that of a mild sunburn.
Question: Name any of the five aspects of critical thinking that were
missing in the decision-making process of the first social worker who
made the assessment of child abuse. As stated above, describe briefly to
demonstrate your understanding.
16. The class discussed the Tarasoff Case using the power point “Duty to Warn” on Module 3. Describe how the therapist followed the “Duty to Warn” legal duty. If the therapist had followed the “Duty to Protect” principle, what additional action would he have performed?
