Social Psychology Journal Assignment

(1) Recall the big questions discussed in Chapter 1. Select one (or more) of the questions, and apply it to a specific situation in your life. Briefly describe the situation, and discuss how you would answer the question based on your experience in that situation.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

(2) Many people are concerned with the image others have of them. To alter people’s images, you might behave, act, and present yourself in a certain way. In other words, many people attempt to control the impression others form of them. This process is known as impression management.

In this journal assignment:

· Explain a situation in which you or someone you know engaged in impression management. Why did you engage in this behavior?

· Do you believe that you engage in impression management often? Why, or why not?

· Based on your answers above, when you engage in impression management, do you believe you are successful? Why, or why not?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary

(3) In this journal, you will discuss at least one instance in your life in which a person was perceived to be at fault for a negative thing that happened to them. The example you provide can come from your direct experience, the experiences of others in your life, the news media, or from a movie or television show.

Specifically, answer the following questions.

a. How is this scenario an example of blaming the victim? Do you agree or disagree with this perception?

b. How is blaming the victim related to the fundamental attribution error and potentially harm victims further?

c. Discuss what steps can be taken to avoid blaming the victim in similar scenarios and why you think that would be successful based on your own experiences.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

(4) Identify one ad (a static ad, not a commercial) you have seen that made you want a product or that you actually purchased a product you had not bought before. Evaluate it, and then reflect on the following questions.

◾ What product does this ad attempt to market, and where is the ad from? (Provide a website link or upload the picture. If this is not available, describe the ad.)

◾ Who is the intended audience for this ad?

◾ Which component(s) of attitudes (e.g., affective, behavioral, cognitive) most appeal to you with this ad?

◾ Knowing what you do about persuasion tactics, why do you think thead was effective in catching your attention and making you consider purchasing the product?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary

(5) In this journal assignment, identify a time when you, or someone you know, was part of a group that suffered from social loafing. In your response, address the following items.

◾ Briefly explain how social loafing applied to the behaviors of your group members.

◾ Describe strategies that you think could have increased or decreased the likelihood of social loafing occurring in your group.

◾ Based on your answers above, what do you think would have been the best course of action to reduce social loafing in your group? How might your recommendation change if you were the one engaging in social loafing versus other group members?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

(6)Think of a time that you used the concept of catharsis as a way to release frustration or anger. In your journal response, describe what you did to engage in catharsis. Then, discuss both the positive and the negative outcomes to which using catharsis led. Considering these outcomes, what might you do differently in a similar situation? What actions may be more successful in moving forward and/or feeling better?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

(7) One way I/O psychology contributes to the workplace is through job analysis and creating job advertisements. First, look online for a job ad in which you have interest in applying (the job need not be psychology-related). For your journal response, briefly describe the job ad. Be sure to address where you found it (provide a website link or upload a picture, if available), what the position is, what the key responsibilities of the job are, and what are stated as required and/or recommended background, education, and skills to be successful in the position. Then, address the following points.

a. Do you agree with the requirements and recommendations for the job as described? Why, or why not?

b. How do your own background, education, and skills match the job ad?

c. Do you believe you would be successful in getting a job offer and fulfilling this position? Why, or why not?
