PMHNP 6675:  Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Care across the Lifespan II

PMHNP 6675:  Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Care across the Lifespan II

The assignment for this week provides me with an opportunity to evaluate and identify my strengths and weaknesses, which will be essential in preparing for the national exam and help me be a qualified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. For this quarter, I will review my week two results to identify the strengths and flaws, and using course materials will offer an opportunity to emphasize areas I need to improve. From m preliminary analysis, I realized that I needed more time in pharmacology, which encouraged me to practice more, become successful in my studies, and acquire the competence to work as a Psychiatric Health Mental Nurse. The assignment also helps develop my competence as I face my licensure board exam.

Current Strengths and Opportunities for Improvement

As I get into the last clinical phase, I have realized that there are some areas that I have significantly improved and also identified some weaknesses in some other areas. One of the strengths, for instance, is in the area of assessment. Assessment is one of the vital stages in treatment that is directly associated with effective healthcare outcomes. I am competent in developing accurate assessment questions in the area of assessment. During the assessment, I can develop appropriate questions for my patients, which helps me gather sufficient patient information. Besides, I can induce a favorable patient-nurse interaction that helps ease tension among patients while preparing them to respond to assessment questions. Further, I have appropriate listening skills that help gather more information that will guide the development of an appropriate treatment plan.

One weakness that I have identified is in the area of developing an appropriate treatment plan for a patient after assessment. I consulted my preceptor after diagnosing a patient to guide me in developing an appropriate treatment plan, but the intervention turns to be similar to what I had identified. In other words, I lack the confidence to make a treatment plan independently. Still, I feel like, with continued practice, I will eventually be able to make appropriate decisions without consulting or relying on my preceptor.

SMART goals for this quarter

At the start of this new quarter, I will attempt to study mental health illnesses and all associated factors such as genetics to allow me to identify essential information in the pathogenesis and etiology of mental health illnesses. I will use the Walden library as my key resource in accomplishing this task. At the end of every week, I will be more than 95 percent informed on the various genetic and environmental factors associated with mental illnesses.

At the start of this quarter, I will search for appropriate online websites that deal with pharmacology and try to attempt some of the questions posed which will help me solve some common issues in psychology. I will attempt to solve at least 100 questions per week. At the end of the quarter, I would be 95 percent conversant with appropriate treatment plans for my patients.

This quarter, I will try to engage in at least one case study to gain confidence in developing a treatment plan. The main resource I will use is coursework to practice case studies. At the end of the quarter, I will be at least 95 percent conversant with formulating treatment plans.

Resources I would use to accomplish my goals and tasks

Given that I am an auditory-visual learner, I will try to watch many videos on case studies that offer various treatment plans for psychiatric patients. Will also use the Walden library, which is also rich in appropriate resources about mental health issues.
