Stages of Life

There is a close association between healthcare needs and the stage of life of an individual. This means that depending on the stage of life that one is in, there are unique healthcare needs (Mazya, Garvin and Ekdahl, 2019). Health care practitioners advocate for different health alleviation practices and diets for different patients based on their age. In view of this, a family member has been selected for an interview exercise whereupon they share their experiences with the health care system. Drawing from this, the individual selected for the interview activity is my 59-year-old, AW (the initials of her name), an aunt who stays home with us. AW falls under the age category of middle-aged adults albeit at the cusp of the golden age. Health care needs are positively correlated with individuals’ stages of life. Awareness of healthcare needs at different stages is important as it points out the medical checks and diets required to alleviate high-quality health.

Questions

Do you feel that your stage of life had any effect on your interaction with health care professionals?

Interviewee: I do feel that as one gets older, the practitioners in hospitals get more concerned and increasingly personalize care. In recent visits I have had with the healthcare system, the physicians and nurses I interacted with went as far as to tell me that at my age, I needed a lot of health care attention relative to my younger years.

Mazya, Garvin and Ekdahl (2019) opined that as people get older, their immune system weakens and becomes lower in responding and this explains why older people get relatively sicker. Looking back, my aunt, and my grandparents in equal measure, frequently visit health care centers much more than other members of the family.

Which areas of the hospital or clinic were most concerned with your well-being and feelings?

Interviewee: I have had a multitude of hospital visits in the past five years and the area I feel my feelings and wellbeing are best-taken care of is in the ward. While the provision of healthcare in all departments matters, it is during my times in the ward and especially my interactions with the nurses I feel best cared for.

Today, healthcare providers are keener on providing quality care instead of quantity care (Grocott & McSherry, 2018). What this means is that registered nurses and other healthcare practitioners are called upon to offer personalized high-quality care to patients.

Was your family with you during this hospital stay or outpatient visit?

Interviewee: On many occasions, I have family around me when I make these clinical visits. In part, they do this to demonstrate love and care and also in appreciation of the fact that at my age, I need assistance in technologies and systems in modern hospitals.

Healthcare is today heavily influenced by technology. Grocott and McSherry (2018) mentioned examples such as the emergence of nursing informatics where technology and healthcare knowledge and integrated to help create improved care practices. Reflecting on the handful of visits I have made to healthcare centers, the technologies used by practitioners appear to be ever-increasing. Perhaps, this has been a result of efforts by the government in liaison with healthcare providers to focus on quality care rather than quantity care.

Was your family included in your treatment, such as post-procedure instructions?

Interviewee: Yes, consultations were made with my family before and after treatment. This was done, I presume, to get their views on my medical history and post-treatment instructions such as home care, physical exercises, and diet.

Acknowledging the many changes and standards of care that prevail in healthcare today Dewar (2017) stated that personalization of care has become an important standard, especially by nurses because of the close proximity they have with patients.

Reflection

Conducting the interview with my aunt brought to light a number of issues regarding healthcare which, going into the future and as a nurse, will be regarded with higher importance. Firstly, the healthcare system, and more so the nursing fraternity, is cognizant of the fact that different stages of life call for different care. This is to mean that depending on the age that one falls under determines the type of healthcare and medication. In truth, my expectation was that the aspect of age had minimal impact on the healthcare needs. However, conducting this interview highlighted that different age groups have a relatively higher demand and need for healthcare. Research has demystified this by highlighting the varying levels of immunity that influence the health status of individuals.

Recap

Suffice to say, there is a very close association between the different stages of life in terms of age and healthcare. There is a high tendency for people in their old age and infancy to seek relatively higher medical care. In part, this is explained by the fact that at these stages the immunity is either low, for the infants and children, or declining, for the old people. With healthcare improving constantly and as the old aged population increases, the demand for quality care is ever increasing. The emergence of healthcare informatics and other technologies have helped improve the approach to healthcare from the traditional institution-centered one to a more modern one centered on patients.
