You are responsible for minimally at least 3 posts for each question in your discussion boards; your initial post and reply to two of your classmates. Your initial post(s) should be your response to the questions posed in the discussion question. You should research your answer and cite at least one scholarly source when appropriate, and always use quality writing. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials The discussion board is never a place to use text language or emoticons. You will also be asked to respond to your classmates. This is designed to enhance the academic discussion around the topic. It is all right to disagree with something posted by another, however your responses should always be thoughtful and respectful and reflect your opinions professionally. Discussion Question:
Select several media examples of teaching content on a single topic. Evaluate each of these examples and consider the effectiveness of the different media in dealing with the topic. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials Offer suggestions regarding the appropriateness of these media for different learner populations depending on size, age, cultural diversity, and educational background of the audience, as well as on the setting in which information is delivered.

Assignment:
Critical Thinking Exercises:
- Review the section on commercially prepared teaching materials. Take a stand on the issue of using free patient education materials provided by drug or formula manufacturers. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials Defend your position.
- Conduct a literature search on one method of traditional teaching strategies. Summarize the findings of two different (opposing) scholarly articles.
- Why is it that instructional materials should not be selected before behavioral objectives are determined?
- Case Study: Mr. D.W., 84 years old, suffers from high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and beginning glaucoma. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials He falls at a church function and is taken by ambulance to the emergency room. Unfortunately, his daughter, who usually accompanies him to his primary care clinic, is working. He refuses to have the staff “bother her at the job.” Mr. W. cannot tell the emergency room nurse what medications he is taking. He states that he takes a blue pill for his “high blood” in the morning, and two pink pills at dinner. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials He also says that he puts drops in his eyes every day. He nods his head when the emergency room staff tell him that his X-rays show no signs of a fracture, that he should consult his physician if a hematoma develops, elevate his left foot which is wrapped in an ace bandage, and apply ice packs for twenty four hours. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials He signs the discharge form and receives printed instructions for care of a sprained ankle. An elderly friend who has followed the ambulance from church and stayed in the waiting room helps him into her car and drives him home. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials Use Table 11-11 (Bastable, p. 498) to answer the following questions:
a. What traditional method of instruction (first five methods) would you choose for your patient, and why? N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials
b. Which non-traditional method (second five methods) would you choose for your patient, and why?
Professional Development:
- Prepare a 10-minute lecture on a topic that is of interest to you. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials Describe the audience and the setting, and the relative advantages/limitations of the lecture as a format for learning in this situation. List the learning objectives, and describe the supplementary materials that will be used (i.e. handouts, audiovisuals) and provide the rationale for your selection of the supplementary materials. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials Submit a lecture outline, and describe how you would evaluate if the learning objectives were met. Instructional Methods and Materials
Module 4 will review the types of instructional methods available and consider how to choose them most efficiently and effectively. In doing so, the advantages and limitations of each method, the variables influencing the selection of various methods, and the approaches for evaluating the methods will be identified to improve the delivery of instruction in diverse circumstances and settings. This module also provides a systematic overview of the process for selecting, developing, N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials implementing, and evaluating instructional materials.
Time Requirements:
The amount of time required to complete assignments in this module is approximately 17 to 20 hours.
Objectives:
After completing this module, students should have the knowledge and skills to:
- Compare and contrast the relative advantages and limitations of the various teaching methods
- Determine the optimal instructional method based on audience characteristics, learning objectives, cost effectiveness, instructional setting, and evolving technology
- Evaluate instructional methods to assess effectiveness. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials
- Identify the three major variables (learner, task, and media characteristics) to be considered when selecting, developing, and evaluating instructional materials.
- Cite the three components of instructional materials required to effectively communicate educational messages.
- Analyze the advantages and disadvantages specific to each type of instructional medium. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials
- Evaluate the type of media suitable for use depending on such variables as the size of the audience, the resources available, and the characteristics of the learner.

Summary:
This module presented an in-depth review of the various instructional methods and compared the advantages and limitations of each approach. Also, the instructional setting in which teaching takes place was briefly addressed. Emphasis was given to the importance of taking into account learner characteristics, behavioral objectives, teacher characteristics, and available resources prior to selecting or designing any of the vast array of methods at the teacher’s disposal. Debate and problem-based learning were put forth as examples of teaching strategies that promote learner interaction involvement. Major questions to be considered when evaluating the effectiveness of instructional methods were assessed in detail. Finally, techniques to enhance verbal presentations and some general principles to increase effectiveness were discussed.
This module also reviewed the major categories of instructional materials, identified how to select media from a range of possible options based on their advantages and disadvantages, and addressed how to evaluate their effectiveness. N 582 Module 4: Instructional Methods and Materials The importance of considering the characteristics of the learner, the media, and the task when choosing the instructional material was emphasized. The supplemental nature of teaching materials was stressed, as was the need to keep learning and behavioral objectives in focus when selecting these materials as adjuncts to instruction.
