Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies

Vanessa Williams : Initial Post

Hi everyone! My name is Vanessa Williams. Yes, like the celebrity (smile) I currently live in N.C. I have been a nurse for 5 1/2 years.  I am very eager to further my knowledge in such a rewarding field. NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice CompetenciesI appreciate the endless, rewarding opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my patients. I admire the profession and find it very interesting.  NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice CompetenciesIt’s very gratifying to know I’m a part of a team that made someone well again.  I have been in nursing leaderships and have a variety of experience in different roles in nursing. They include geriatrics, leadership, education, cardiac, neuroscience, respiratory care, and currently triage. NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies

As a nurse practitioner, I plan to promote wellness through patient education. I dedicate my journey to my parents in heaven. I lost my father to Cancer in 2013 and my mother to complications from Diabetes in 2018. NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies  Last summer, I lost my favorite uncle to Cancer as well.  Their hard work and loving support are truly my inspiration for my success!

Strengths

Advanced practice requires a solid foundation and knowledge base. (Jennings,2015).  In addition to shared governance, I am also affiliated with several nursing organizations to collaborate about issues concerning quality improvement and evidence-based practice and research. NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies  While volunteering at the Free Medical Clinic of the Midlands, I gained valuable experience.  I noticed several disparities in healthcare.   Health insurance coverage, access to and use of facilities, and knowledge of medical treatment were among the deficits in our community. I have also taken steps to advocate for my community by volunteering in several health fairs. NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies

Challenges

Nurse practitioner service has a positive impact on the quality of care.  With all of the positive effects, barriers arose from the nurse practitioner role in healthcare. NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice CompetenciesNurse practitioners often do not receive the respect they need as a provider from higher level practitioner (Adams, Becker, Howard, Roberts, & Roblin,2004).  There is often a misunderstanding of the role of nurse practitioners from patients (Adams, et. al, 2004). The profession is often compared to a physician’s assistant, while being belittled (Oliver,2014). NURS 6531 Discussion: Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice CompetenciesSometimes they are faced with unrealistic expectations making their job a little harder to do.  Role development becomes very important.  Modification of oneself becomes expected (Oliver,2014) It is very important to gain a deeper understanding of caring for adults.
